Plug-in Hybrids at Home: Do You Need a Charger?
Plug-in hybrids combine a petrol engine with a smaller battery that can be charged from the mains. Many London drivers use them for short electric trips around town and the engine for longer journeys. A common question is whether a plug-in hybrid needs a dedicated home charger, or whether a normal socket is enough. This post explains the options.
Smaller batteries, shorter charge times
Plug-in hybrid batteries are much smaller than those in fully electric cars, so they charge faster. Many also have a lower maximum charging rate. A full charge from empty can often be done overnight even at low power, so the case for a charger depends on how you use the car. Check your car's handbook for its charging rate.
Can you use a normal three-pin socket
Most plug-in hybrids come with a cable that plugs into a household socket. It works, but it is slow, and it puts a heavy load on the socket for many hours. Older sockets, extension leads and outdoor sockets not designed for the job can overheat. If you do use a three-pin socket, have an electrician check it is suitable, and never use an extension lead or cable reel. Our guide to how long it takes to charge at home compares the speeds.
Why a dedicated charger still helps
- It runs on its own protected circuit, so it is designed to carry the load safely every night.
- Smart features let you charge on cheaper overnight rates.
- It is weatherproof and built for outdoor use.
- If your next car is fully electric, the charger is already in place.
Our guide to smart charger rules explains the scheduling features.
Charge often to get the benefit
A plug-in hybrid only saves fuel if you keep the battery charged. Plugging in every night means most short journeys can be done on electric power. A charger by the front door makes that habit easy.
Which charger to choose
A standard 7kW smart charger suits both plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars, so it will not need replacing if you change cars. Tethered or untethered depends on how you park. See our guide to tethered or untethered chargers.
