Smart Charger Rules Explained for London Homes
If you are getting a home EV charger fitted in London, the charger has to meet the smart charge point rules that have applied in Great Britain since 2022. Most people never notice them, but they explain why a new charger sometimes waits a few minutes before it starts, and why it may avoid the early evening. Here is what the rules mean in plain English.
What the regulations require
The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 cover chargers sold and installed for private use in Great Britain, such as at home or at work. In short, a home charger must:
- Be smart: able to connect to the internet and change when and how fast it charges.
- Come with off-peak default settings: out of the box it is set not to charge in the weekday peak periods, roughly 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm. You can change or override these settings at any time.
- Add a random delay: each charge can start after a short random wait of up to about ten minutes, so thousands of cars do not all switch on at once when cheap rates begin.
- Show your usage: you must be able to see how much electricity the charger uses and when.
- Meet security rules: the software and connection must be protected so the charger cannot be taken over remotely.
What this means day to day
For most drivers the rules are helpful. Plug in when you get home, and the charger fills the car overnight when electricity is cheapest. If you need a top-up at 6pm before a trip, you can override the default from the app. If your charger seems to pause for a few minutes before starting, that is the random delay working as intended, not a fault.
Pairing a smart charger with a cheap tariff
Many energy suppliers now offer EV tariffs with a much lower overnight rate. A smart charger can be set to charge only in those hours, and some tariffs control the charger directly to use the cheapest periods. Before you book an installation, it is worth checking which chargers your supplier supports.
Is your supply and fuse board ready?
A smart charger does not change what the electrics need. A 7kW charger still needs its own circuit, the right protection and enough capacity on your main supply. Older London homes often need a consumer unit upgrade first, and some need load management so the charger backs off when the oven and shower are on.
