EV Charger Maintenance: Simple Checks for London Homeowners

A home EV charger needs very little attention, but a few simple checks through the year help it stay safe and reliable. Most chargers in London live outside, exposed to rain, frost, sun and the odd knock from bins or bikes. This post covers the easy checks you can do yourself, and when to call an electrician.

Monthly look-over

  • Look at the charger casing for cracks, loose covers or signs of water getting in.
  • Check the cable along its length for cuts, kinks, crushed sections or exposed inner layers.
  • Look at the plug and socket pins for dirt, corrosion or scorch marks.
  • Make sure the cable is stored properly, coiled on its holder rather than left on the ground.

If you find any damage, stop using the charger and get it checked. Do not open the unit or tape up a damaged cable.

Keep it clean

Wipe the casing with a damp cloth now and then, and keep leaves, cobwebs and dirt away from vents and the plug holder. Never use a pressure washer or hose on the charger. If the plug gets wet, let it dry before use, and keep the protective cap on when it is not plugged in.

Test the protection

Many chargers have built-in protection, and some installations include a separate RCD in the consumer unit or a weatherproof isolator next to the charger. Know where these are and how to reset them. If the charger trips repeatedly, see our guide to common home charger problems.

Keep software up to date

Smart chargers receive software updates through Wi-Fi or mobile data. Keep the charger connected and the app updated so scheduling, security and safety features work as intended. Our guide to smart charger rules explains why the connection matters.

Seasonal checks

Before winter, check that the cable stays flexible and the casing seals are intact. After storms or frost, look again for damage. See our post on charging in cold weather for more winter tips.

Professional inspection

The charger circuit is part of your home's electrical installation, so it is tested during a periodic inspection. Having it checked by an electrician every few years, or whenever you notice a problem, gives peace of mind. Energy North Ltd inspects and repairs home chargers across North, East and West London with City & Guilds certified electricians. See our EV charger installation page.
