EV Charger Installation in Ealing and Hounslow

Ealing and Hounslow have a lot of homes that suit a home charger: 1930s semis with front drives, Edwardian houses with side access, and newer estates with their own parking. This post covers what to check before fitting a charger in West London, and the issues we most often find in local homes.

Areas we cover

We fit chargers across Ealing, Acton, Hanwell, Greenford, Northolt, Southall, Hounslow, Isleworth, Brentford, Chiswick, Feltham and Cranford. Our main blog covers electrical work in Ealing and Brentford and Hounslow and Chiswick.

Check the supply and the board first

A standard 7 kW charger draws a lot of current for hours at a time. Before fitting one we check the main fuse, the earthing arrangement and the consumer unit. Many homes here still have older boards with no spare way or no suitable RCD protection, and some need an upgrade first. Our guide on whether you need a new consumer unit for an EV charger explains why.

Where to put the charger

On a typical semi, the charger goes on the front wall next to the drive, with the cable run inside or along the wall from the board. Where the board is at the back of the house, the cable route takes more planning. A post mounted charger can suit drives where the car parks away from the wall. Our post on a post or wall mounted charger covers the choice.

Smart charging and night tariffs

All new home chargers must be smart, which means you can schedule charging for the cheaper night time hours on an EV tariff. The smart charger rules explain what that means in practice.

What we often find in West London homes

  • Older consumer units with no RCD protection.
  • Main fuses that leave little spare capacity with an electric shower and cooker in use.
  • Long cable routes from a rear kitchen board to a front drive.
  • Garages fed by old cables that are not suitable for a charger.
