What to Ask Before Booking a Home EV Charger Installer in London
Choosing who installs your home EV charger matters as much as choosing the charger itself. A good installer checks your supply properly, explains the options and leaves you with the right paperwork. Here are the questions worth asking before you book in London.
Will you survey the property first
A proper quote should be based on photos or a visit that checks the main fuse, consumer unit, earthing and cable route. Be wary of a fixed price given without any look at the property, as it may not include upgrades you turn out to need. Our guide on whether you need a new consumer unit explains what a survey looks for.
Who will do the work
Ask whether the person installing is a qualified electrician, and whether the business is registered to self-certify electrical work under building regulations. Ask which charger brands they are approved to install, as some manufacturers only support installations by trained installers.
What is included in the price
- The charger itself and the cable from the consumer unit.
- Any protection devices, isolator and earthing arrangement needed.
- Drilling, clipping and making good.
- Setting up the app and showing you how to use it.
- Notifying the network operator.
What paperwork will I get
You should receive an electrical installation certificate for the new circuit and confirmation that the work has been notified. Keep these with your house documents, as you may need them when you sell. Our post on moving house with an EV charger explains why.
What happens on the day
Ask how long the job will take and how long the power will be off. Our post on installation day walks through a typical visit.
What if something goes wrong later
Ask about the warranty on the charger and the workmanship, and who to call if the charger stops working. See our guide to common charger problems.
