EV Charger Installation in Havering and Barking
Havering and Barking and Dagenham, on the eastern edge of London, have some of the best conditions in the city for home EV charging. Much of Romford, Hornchurch, Upminster and Dagenham is made up of 1930s semis, terraces with front gardens and bungalows, many with drives. This post covers what to check before fitting a charger in East London.
Areas we cover
We fit chargers across Romford, Hornchurch, Upminster, Elm Park, Rainham, Harold Wood, Collier Row, Barking, Dagenham, Chadwell Heath and Becontree. Our main blog covers electrical work in Romford and Havering and Barking and Dagenham.
Semis and bungalows with drives
A 7 kW charger on the front wall is the usual choice. Many homes here have had their front gardens turned into drives, which makes a home charger straightforward. We check the main fuse, earthing and consumer unit first, as many houses still have older boards. Our guide on whether you need a new consumer unit for an EV charger explains what we look for.
Becontree and former council houses
Many former council houses on the Becontree estate and elsewhere have been extended and rewired in parts over the years. Some have shared paths or narrow frontages, so the charger position and cable route need planning. Our guide to charging on a shared driveway covers what to sort out first.
Main fuse and electric showers
Many homes here have electric showers, which draw a large current. Before adding a charger we check whether the supply can cope, and if it is tight, a charger with load management can slow down while the shower is on. Our main blog explains this in EV charger and electric shower: is your main fuse big enough?
What we often find
- Older consumer units with no RCD protection.
- Main fuses with little spare capacity after an electric shower is added.
- Garages fed by old cables that are not suitable for a charger.
- Outdoor sockets with no weatherproofing.
